METHANOBASE
2015-2018
METHANOgenic Biodiversity and activity in Arctic, subarctic and Subantarctic Ecosystems affected by climate change
Methane emissions from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems play a crucial role in global warming, which is particularly affecting high-latitude ecosystems. As major contributors to methane emissions in natural environments, the microbial communities involved in methane production and oxidation deserve a special attention. Microbial diversity and activity are expected to be strongly affected by the already observed (and further predicted) temperature increase in high-latitude ecosystems, eventually resulting in disrupted feedback methane emissions. The METHANOBASE project has been designed to investigate the intricate relations between microbial diversity and methane emissions in Arctic, Subarctic and Subantarctic ecosystems, under natural (baseline) conditions and in response to simulated temperature increments. To achieve this highly challenging purpose, the METHANOBASE project relies on the use of state of the art molecular tools and on a pluridisciplinary team including experts from Europe (France, Belgium, Norway) and South America (Chile, Uruguay), as well as local partners in Siberia, Alaska and Patagonia for field expedition support.
METHANOBASE project has been selected for funding by the ERANet-LAC program: Network of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Countries on Joint Innovation and Research Activities

NEWS
The 2nd meeting will take place in May 2017, in Toulouse...
July - August 2016: Siberia
The third and last field campaign took place around Igarka from July, 26th to August, 15th. Sixteen ecosystems were studied and sampled. The people involved in this field work were: A. Pimov, A. Sepulveda, F. Thalasso, K. Martinez, L. Cabrol, L. Gandois, M. Barret, M. Deschuyteneer, N. Tananaev and O. Nieto.
June - July 2016: Alaska
The second field campaign took place in Alaska, around Fairbanks. Nineteen ecosystems were investigated, between 63.2°N and 68.6°N.
January - February 2016: Patagonia
The kick-off meeting was followed by the first field campaign in Patagonia, from Punta Arenas to Tierra del Fuego and Cabo de Horno. The on-site laboratory was settled in the Laboratorio de Macroalgas, Instituto de la Patagonia (Punta Arenas). The campaign lasted one month and a half. Twenty ecosystems between 67°S and 73°S were investigated.
January 6th-7th, 2016: Punta Arenas
The University of Magallanes hosted the kick-off meeting in Punta Arenas. All groups were represented in Punta Arenas (UMag, ECOLAB, CINVESTAV, UiT) or by videoconference (PUCV, IIBCE, RBINS, MPI, UAF)
